Predictions for Harry Potter 7

Assumption One= I have lots of guesses about what will happen in the final Harry Potter book

Assumption Two= It is impossible to guess the plot of any Harry Potter book, because J.K. Rowling surprises me (and everyone else) every time.

Assumption Three= I'm going to post what my guesses are anyway.

Assumption Four= Nobody will make too much fun of me (fingers crossed) on July 22 when it turns out that all my guesses are wrong.

So... disclaimers out of the way... here's what I think. They're not really spoilers (spoilers are when you have actual information about the book, which I don't... although if you haven't read all the books, you might not want to continue reading this post.)

My wild stab-in-the-dark guesses (some of which are based on the scores of J.K. Rowling interviews I've read), in no particular order:
  • Time traveling will be involved.
  • Harry and Voldemort go "behind the veil" in the Ministry of Magic.
  • Regulus Black is not R.A.B.
  • The initials R.A.B. have nothing to do with identifying the person they refer to. They refer to an acronym like "Really Amazing Boy".... in the way that the Half Blood Prince didn't refer to an actual "prince."
  • My craziest guess that will be wrong... R.A.B. is Snape.
  • Snape isn't working for Voldemort or Dumbledore, he's working for himself.
  • "Godric's" Hollow has something to do with Godric Gryffindor.
  • The mirror that Sirius gave Harry in Book 5 will be REALLY important.
  • There is a graveyard at Hogwarts that will be important.
  • There is a female ghost at Hogwarts (who has been mentioned twice in passing) and will figure into the plot of Book 7.
  • Professor Trelawney really isn't a flake- she's actually a competent fortuneteller.
  • My husband's guess: Harry/Trelawney will use Divination to find the Horcruxes.
  • The ending will be something no one could have ever predicted, and it will be fabulous.

If you want to make your own predictions... there's a wonderful quiz at The Leaky Cauldron where you can get all your guesses down before the book comes out. If the link to the quiz section doesn't work, go to Leaky's main page and click on quizzes on the left hand side. A word of warning... it's a LONG quiz, so be sure you have some time to do it before you start.

UPDATE: So five of my predictions (out of thirteen) were correct. Not so good... but I'm proud that I got the female ghost prediction right.

  1. Hmmm. Eenteresting predictions... As I have been listening to the charming Jim Dale a lot on my iPod lately, an annoying little detail cropped up in my head that a fellow HP geek may be able to help me with. In Order of the Phoenix, how can Moody tell it's a boggart in the writing desk if, according to Lupin in Prisoner of Azkaban, nobody knows what a boggart looks like when it's alone? Because Moody wasn't really "facing" the boggart, he was just looking through the writing desk with his magical eye. Or am I just needlessly nitpicky? Possibly.
A thought about one of your predictions, though ... Sirius' two-way mirror smashed at the end of Order of the Phoenix (after Harry tried to talk to Sirius with it). I think RAB will be Regulus Black - mostly because there's been a thread of underestimating and misapprehending people's true motives/actions/powers going through the books. Most clearly Snape. Speaking of Snape - I think you're right in that he's on his own side. I like the Trelawney angle of your husband's. :) I think the long-haired woman ghost will have some part to play (and I think she's a Ravenclaw). Speaking of people with parts to play - I want to see how Peter Pettigrew folds into all of this. And what part Neville will play. Okay, enough geeking. It's nice to see you out here in the blogosphere. Maybe I should give it a whirl...

  2. Yup... Moody is able to see the boggart in book 5.... this is a detail that's bugged me too.

Yes, Sirius' two-way mirror did smash at the end of Order of the Phoenix... but J.K. Rowling has made some comments in interviews that have suggested that it's still important.

I think I'm the only person who doesn't think that R.A.B. will be Regulus Black.... certainly there's evidence for it to be Regulus, but as he's been portrayed so far, he just doesn't seem skilled enough to have gotten the horcrux in the first place.

I think the long haired female ghost is a Ravenclaw too(that's the only house that doesn't have a ghost.)

Peter Pettigrew will definitely play a part... we still haven't seen Harry be thankful for saving Pettigrew's life yet.

Oooh, I'd love to read a blog written by you.

  3. I haven't been reading Harry Potter blogs, but I did just finish going through all six books again. My predictions:

    * Hogwarts will close, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione will complete their education on the road.
    * Both Hagrid and Snape will be killed.
    * Neville will hook up with Luna Lovegood.
    * Snape is good!

My personal theory is that it doesn't matter about whether Snape is good or evil, but it tells you an awful lot about the reader if they believe Snape is good or evil. Me, I tend to see the best in people, so my money's on good.

Also, to slip into 30-something fanboy mode and utter confuse sci-fi with fantasy, Snape's murder of Dumbledore always reminded me of Darth Vader killing Obi-Wan Kenobi in STAR WARS. Vader is the agent of evil, killing the kindly old mentor. But he's not the ultimate evil--the Emperor is. In THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, Luke has to overcome his hatred of Vader in the cave, his desire for vengeance for the murder of his family. In RETURN OF THE JEDI, Luke finds the good that remains in Vader, and Vader is the one who vanquishes the evil Emperor. To me, it's the same triangle as Harry, Snape, and Voldemort.

    (End of fanboy rant.)
