Harry Potter 7: Discussion Question Five

There's been a lot of discussion about whether J.K. Rowling should reveal the professions/sexual orientations/favorite colors of her characters if she didn't write about in the published books.

But, let's say for a moment that she didn't and that there was no further information about Harry and friends other than what was contained in the pages of the seven novels.

What do you think the future of the characters are? What would you like them to be? Without straying too far into the area of fan fiction... what careers/relationships/pets/whatever would you imagine they have?

Although this discussion question doesn't really contain spoilers (even if you haven't read the 7th book, you probably assume that at least a character or two survived until the end)... my guess is that the comments section will be full of spoilers- so be careful if you haven't finished the book.

For more discussion questions about Book 7, see this post. Also, check out this post for some bonus discussion questions that were actually asked to (and answered by) J.K. Rowling.

UPDATE: Yes, there are spoilers in the comments section of this post. For my opinion(s) about the future of the characters (with huge spoilers)... see here.

  1. Maybe part of my frustration with Rowling's discussion of characters' lives beyond the seventh book is that the things she's said seem, following the set-up she's done in the course of the series, so obvious and right. So why *not* let readers make their own conclusions? Take Neville -- of *course* he was going to go into herbology, and his gentle nature does lend itself to teaching young ones. And Harry's wanted to be an auror since he first learned what one was. Hermione I would totally have seen as an attorney for whatever the wizarding equivalent of the ACLU is. I guess my ideas about Luna depart from Rowling's, in that I would expect Luna not only to travel the world in search of oddities, but to follow in her father's footsteps and *write* about them -- that she'd be a writer more than anything else. I'm less sure about Draco, but I imagine he'd end up wearing a suit doing something corporate with a lot of money involved. What about you?

  2. I want to add... I can't see Luna being much of a journalist, but I think she'd write the most fanciful travel missives from the Amazon jungle. She'd always be a loose, free spirit.

  3. It's funny, but having everyone talking about Harry & co. again just makes me *miss* them, you know? I have no perspective on that series. I was just too close to it. Which is weird.

  4. Celery Soda- Very intriguing theories. I love hearing this kind of stuff.

What do I think? Good question. I started writing a response in the comments section... and went on for so long that I decided to write a post about it. See above.

Adrienne- yes, I miss Harry too. Actually, I think I miss is hearing people talk about it. I have no perspective on the series whatsoever either.
